Lacy Shrug by Joan McGowan-Michael
This lacy shrug is a lovely cover-up. Perfect for summer in cotton or a blend, warm and elegant in winter made in Angora or mohair. Use the fiber of your choice, just be certain to swatch for proper gauge.
Materials:
- 650 yards of any sport weight yarn that yields the gauge below. I used Lenox mohair for the swatch shown.
-1 pair each size 4 and 7 needles
Gauge: 4 sts and 7 rows per inch over pattern st.
Pattern st:
Multiple of 6 sts plus 5.
Row 1:K1,*Yo, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k3, repeat from * ending with K1.
Row 2 and 4: Purl
Row 3: K4,* yo, sl 1 , K2tog, psso, yo, k3 , rep fr * ending with K4.
Repeat these four rows for pattern st.
Beginning at cuff and using smaller needles, cast on 54 sts and work in k2,p2 ribbing for 3". Change to larger needles, and knitting across next row, increase 20 sts evenly. Purl across next row, again increasing 20, then knit across next row increasing 19sts.-113 sts. Purl one row.
With right side facing begin pattern st. Work until shrug is 511/2" or desired length from beginning. Work decrease rows reversing shaping of other end of shrug. Change back to smaller needles, work cuff, bind off.
Finishing
Steam shrug lightly, stretching fabric to open lacy pattern. Fold in half to determine center back neck. With crochet hook, work 1 row of sc across 8" of upper back neck working only in every other stitch to shape and tighten. Thread needle, sew cuffs and sleeves up for 16".
